If you are having problem with your fuel cost, rest assured, you are not alone as most consumers are facing this problem with their vehicles and are paying much more than they need to. In truth, the best way to save gas would be to alter your motoring habits. Here is a list of useful tips to save gas.

There are lots of people who tend to prolong the time of warming up their vehicle's engine, in reality, 30seconds is more than enough, so don't overdo it. Also, make sure that after the warm up, your automatic choke is properly disengaged; this should be taken not as if the chokes get stuck, and it'll result in bad gas mixture. Another way to save gas is to not start and stop the engine unnecessarily. Also, a one of the common tips, don't go revving on the accelerator when your vehicle is at rest, you're flushing your fuel away needlessly.

Furthermore, fill your tank during the time of the day with the lowest temperature, which is to say, the coolest part of the day, for example, morning or at night. Gasoline is the densest at these times and hence you can save quite a lot of money in the long run. Also, save gas by choosing the brand of fuel which suits your vehicle best. Avoid overfilling, meaning do not fill the gas tank to the top as you will get fuel sloshing out of the tank, definitely wasteful.

Tips to Save Gas

  • Avoid fast starts (i.e., "flooring it"). Accelerate smoothly. Your car uses more fuel accelerating than it does cruising. For this reason, avoid routes clogged with "stop-and-go" traffic.
  • Avoid idling for more than a minute. It takes less fuel to restart your car than to idle longer than a minute.
  • Watch your speed. Traveling at 65 m.p.h. instead of 55 m.p.h. can use up to 17% more fuel.
  • Keep your tires properly inflated. Under inflated tires will shorten the life of your tires and reduce your mileage by up to 4% for every 5 pounds of under inflation.
  • Use your cruise control whenever you can.
  • Consider buying radial tires. They can cut your fuel bill by 3%.
  • Avoid extra weight in the car. For every 100 pounds of extra weight in the back seat or trunk, you lose about one mile per gallon.
  • Change your oil regularly. Dirty engine oil makes the engine work harder.
  • Keep your car tuned up. Two bad spark plugs can increase your gas consumption by 20%.
  • Combine short trips.
  • Don't purchase higher octane gas than what your car requires.
  • How are your filters? Dirty filters will burn up 10% more fuel.
  • Avoid wind drag. Driving with open windows burns more fuel. Use your air vents instead.
  • Go easy on the air conditioning. It increases fuel consumption by up to 15%.
  • Try carpooling. It's probably not your first choice, but consider this: you might save $50-$150 a month
